Ha’ena State Park, Kauai - Know Before You Go

KauaiHaena State Park

Visiting Ha’ena State Park

Visitors from all over the world would come to visit the gorgeous northern part of Kauai--not only to visit the charming town of Hanalei or Ha'ena State Park but also to experience the world-renowned Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast, Hanakapi'ai Falls, and Ke'e Beach.

Anyone renting a vacation home on Kauai or staying at one of the resorts up north may wish to visit this beautiful place. However, it's important that you plan accordingly and follow the guidelines outlined by the State.

Na Pali Coast Kauai

In 2018, Kauai experienced torrential flooding, devastating many homes and farms; the trail and access were closed in the immediate aftermath of the flood. Residents and the state felt the closures were an opportunity for the area to start to renew itself and recover from both floods and years of over-tourism.

With that in mind, not to mention the desire to improve the overall experience, the State of Hawaii imposed new entry rules for visitors.

Advance Park Entry Reservation and Parking Permit Required

Whether you're looking to visit Ke'e Beach or hike along the gorgeous Na Pali Coast on the world-renowned Kalalau Trail, ALL non-Hawaii residents must now pay for reservations in advance before making their way Ha'ena State Park.

Please remember that Ha'ena State Park does not have cellular reception, and reservations must be made before arrival. Vehicles without a reservation and permit will be asked to turn around.

Non-Hawaii Resident Park Entry Fees

According to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, here are the State of Hawaii imposed fees to Ha'ena Park:

Effective April 19th 2021 for all dates beyond April 19th, non-residents will need to purchase both entry and parking reservations. Entry reservations will be required for everyone in the vehicle. The costs for non-Hawaii residents are 1) Park Entry Reservations ($5 per person) and 2) Parking Reservation ($10 per vehicle) prior to arrival at Hāʻena SP.

Make Reservations to Ha'ena Park

To make reservations for parking and park entry, please visit gohaena.com.

Overnight Parking in Ha'ena State Park

No overnight parking is allowed at the Ha'ena State Park parking lot or along the Kuhio Highway in Ha'ena. Parking along the Kuhio Highway interferes with local traffic and can cause hazards for residents and visitors alike.

Please do not park on side streets in Ha'ena, as the roads are narrow, and we also want to respect the residents who call these neighborhoods home. Fines and surcharges for illegal parking may be up to $400.00.

Walk-Ins to Ha'ena State Park

It is important to know that walk-ins also require a permit reserved in advance.

Kauai North Shore

Ha’ena State Park Shuttle

To avoid worrying about parking and traffic, using the Ha'ena State Park Shuttle is highly recommended. Reservations for the shuttle can be found on gohaena.com, which includes your paid entrance to the park and also helps decrease the impact on this fragile and culturally sensitive area.

While Ha'ena State Park is officially open to the public, take caution when driving along the North Shore Kuhio Highway, as the road is narrow with one-lane bridges.

When crossing over the one-lane bridges, we ask that you show Aloha and yield to oncoming cars. For more information about the Hanalei to Ha’ena road code of conduct, please visit the Hawaii Community Foundation's Aloha Pledge page
