June is a fun month for cultural events in the Hawaiian Islands. If you are coming to Oahu in June, remember these events!
Royal Hawaiian Band Concert at Iolani Palace - Oahu
June is a month that has important dates for the state of Hawaii. During June, Hawaii’s monarchy and rich cultural heritage are honored. A fun way for the entire family to enjoy an afternoon outside is the Royal Hawaiian Band Concert on the grounds of Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on US soil.
The Royal Hawaiian Band will often play in the early afternoon. Combine this with a visit to the historic palace, the unique Hawaii state capital building, and a walk through downtown. Consider lunch in bustling Chinatown, a historic area in its own right. There are plenty of great places to eat, window shops and lots of galleries! Learn more on the Iolani Palace website.
Kamehameha Day - June 11th
Kamehameha Day is the day that the state of Hawaii honors Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810. Under his reign, the nation of Hawaii was born, and his legacy can be felt to this day. Every June, there are parades and ceremonies all over the islands to honor him.
On Oahu, leis are draped on the statue of Kamehameha downtown across from historic Iolani Palace. It’s a beautiful and moving testament to the strength, pride, and spirit of the Hawaiian people. A parade and festival take place in and around Waikiki. Check out Oahu Kamehameha Day activities.
Obon Dances – Various Locations
Obon is an ancient Buddhist custom that takes place during the summer months. Essentially these are beautiful outdoor festivals that incorporate dance, traditional music, and of course, food. There are festivals throughout the Hawaiian Islands and locals and visitors alike are welcome to join in the fun. These events are free and an opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of Japanese Americans in Hawaii.
On Oahu, there are festivals held around the island throughout June. You can look for events organized through various Buddhist temples and missions, including the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. Look for events at temples on other islands.
